In part it was because of ad placement - I didn't want to agrivate my regular readers so I placed the ads low on the page. One of the tricks that I learned over the years was to put the ads high up on the page and within the content. If you blend them your site can still look nice. I also don't ad within my posts until the posts are about a week to a month old. (that's one concession I've kept for my regular readers, but I'd make a bit more money if I put them up sooner). I don't use Adsense on this blog yet, but I do have several blogs and websites - most of them monetized and I do fairly well.
